Iceni Gold Quarter Stater, Late Freckenham type, c. 40 BC

The obverse is highly decorated a wreath motif. The reverse has a prancing Celticized horse with a ring and pellet design below and a flower above.

This type of coin was first discovered when a hoard of around 90 Iron Age gold coins dating from AD 20 was found in modern day Freckenham, once the territory of the Iceni tribe. Freckenham is a rural village in Suffolk, East Anglia.
